Metal Allergy

Metal allergies occur when the body is exposed to metal and develops an immune response. Although metal allergies are relatively rare, they can cause a wide range of symptoms that may fluctuate in severity depending on your individual sensitivity.

If you believe you may be living with a metal allergy, our physicians at Allergy Partners can help. Find an Allergy Partners Location near you today.

Symptoms

The most common metal allergy is contact dermatitis, especially to nickel found in buttons and jewelry. Contact dermatitis causes red, itchy, blistering skin reactions where the metal touches the skin. As metals are used in several medical devices – orthopedic, dental, cardiac, and other implants – metal allergy may trigger other symptoms. Examples of these include pain and inflammation at the implant site, poor wound healing after surgery, or implant loosening.

Testing

It might be difficult to diagnose and manage hypersensitivity reactions to implanted metals.

At Allergy Partners, we provide comprehensive allergy testing to the most common metal and cement compounds used in dental and orthopedic implant surgeries. This patch testing is done in our office and typically requires three visits over the course of a week or less. These tests involve applying patches to your back with hypoallergenic tape. We will apply an allergen paste to a rash-free area of your skin to detect any irritation.

Testing is recommended for people with:

  • A history of localized rash from metals, such as jewelry or buttons
  • A history of metal allergy preparing to have a joint replacement or other medical implant
  • A joint or implant failure

Treatment

If you suspect that you may be allergic to metal, it is important to consult with a medical professional. Patch tests can determine whether the metal is indeed the culprit causing your symptoms. After testing, your results will be given to you and your referring doctor and be used to make a suitable decision for the proper treatment.
