Sinusitis

The sinuses are hollow areas within the facial bones that connect to the nose. In sinusitis, the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed, swollen, and irritated. When this occurs, the microscopic hair-like projections that border the sinus cavities are unable to remove allergies, dust, and other particles. Instead, these irritants linger and become trapped in those hollow areas, resulting in allergic symptoms.

Sinusitis inflammation is usually caused by allergies and/or infections. Anatomic defects and immune deficiencies may also contribute to sinusitis. Contact Allergy Partners today at (828) 277-1300 to request an appointment and see how we can provide relief.

Testing

A thorough review of the patient’s medical history and symptoms, as well as a physical examination, are the first steps in diagnosing sinusitis. As allergies are a common underlying cause of sinusitis, allergen skin testing to identify specific triggers – such as pollens, pet dander, dust mites and mold – is especially important. Some patients may also benefit from a sinus CT scan or a nasal rhinoscopy, which utilizes a long, flexible tube with a camera at the end to thoroughly inspect the nasal canal.

Four Steps to Relief

Planning Your First Visit

Schedule an appointment at your local office and fill out our pre-registration and medical history forms to help minimize any wait time when you arrive.

Your First Visit

Your initial visit will consist of a consultation, review of your medical history and a comprehensive exam to build a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.

Diagnostics and Testing

We may complete one or more tests to better understand the cause of your symptoms. Common tests include skin testing, pulmonary testing, and blood testing.

Treatment

Following the evaluation and testing, we’ll provide a comprehensive diagnosis and implement a personalized treatment plan that will deliver relief.

Treatment

Analgesics, nasal irrigation, and a brief course of nasal decongestants can all be used as initial sinusitis treatments for immediate relief. Antibiotics or nasal topical steroids may also be necessary for moderate to severe cases of sinusitis.

Patients with allergies triggering their sinusitis symptoms may likely benefit from allergy immunotherapy for long-term treatment. Those with anatomical abnormalities might consider consulting with a surgeon about internal correction. Your allergist will advise you on the best methods of treatment for your specific condition, symptoms, and medical needs.

The Allergy Partners Difference

Your Allergy Partners physician will take a detailed history of your symptoms and medical requirements, in addition to performing a thorough physical examination. This will help your allergist detect the cause of your sinusitis and develop a treatment plan to best fit your needs.
