“I have been practicing as an Allergist/Immunologist for several years now. After completing fellowship I spent five years at the Medical University of South Carolina, SC where I was involved in patient care and research, and after that I joined a private practice group in Rocky Mount, NC. Since my husband got transferred to the VA hospital in Raleigh we decided to move here. Whether in academic medicine or private practice the part which is most fun to me is making an accurate diagnosis!
Once the diagnosis is made, my intention is to form a partnership with my patients based upon clear communication, honesty and trust so that together we can come up with a treatment plan and develop goals which suit their lifestyle, and optimize their health.
I feel very fortunate to be practicing at a time when personalized medicine is becoming a reality. We are now able to offer treatments that specifically target the underlying pathway which is producing a patients’ symptoms. Whenever possible I utilize these cutting edge therapies which often have a better side effect profile.
The aspects of my day to day work that bring me the most joy are simple – it is when patients get better so that they are not limited by their illness. I also value the importance of educating patients so that they can acquire the essential self-management skills to take care of themselves or their loved ones at home.
Some of my interests outside of medicine: baking, reading, going to the gym, following nutrition and fitness blogs, and organizing my kids’ birthday parties!”

Although I am originally from the Midwest (Go Cornhuskers!) the Triangle has definitely become home for me and my family.
It really has been exciting to see the growth of our practice in Raleigh and fulfilling to see our patients improve. My commitment is to enhance the quality of life for both children and adults by the diagnosis and treatment of asthma, food and environmental allergies and immune disease.
I believe that empathetic listening and patient education is key to this goal. Outside of medicine I enjoy spending time with my children, yoga and weight training, and finding time for a date with my husband!
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Gutekunst is thrilled to practice and raise a family in her hometown.
“My interest in allergy and asthma stemmed from a desire to continue to care for adults and children after completing a comprehensive residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Georgetown University, where I was honored to serve as Chief Internal Medicine and Pediatric Resident. Practicing allergy allows me to focus my expertise for this patient population in a field that continues to grow. I was able to complete a wonderful fellowship at the University of Virginia under mentors that are leaders in the field of allergy and asthma. Upon completing fellowship, I was fortunate to care for patients as a faculty member at Duke University Hospital where I served also as Medical Director of the Asthma and Airway Center before joining Allergy Partners of Raleigh in 2013.”
Her interests within the field include allergic rhinitis, asthma and mammalian meat allergy. She is married to her husband of nearly 11 years, Jon, and they have two children ranging in age from 4 to 6 years.
“During my spare time, I enjoy running half marathons and triathlons, volunteering at my son’s school and teaching Bible Study at our church.”
