Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

An alternative to allergy shots, sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is proven to help patients manage conditions such as environmental allergies, eye allergies, and asthma

SLIT introduces small doses of allergens under the tongue daily. This causes a decrease in the body’s production of specific allergic antibody, called IgE, and teaches your immune system to tolerate exposure to allergens in the environment. Over time, allergy symptoms lessen.

SLIT is offered in two forms: tablets and drops. SLIT tablets are FDA approved prescription medications that treat specific allergens – grass pollen, ragweed pollen, and dust mites. Sublingual drops are custom formulated by your allergist and may contain more than one allergen.

Common Side Effects

SLIT is generally very well tolerated, with generally mild and local side effects.

These side effects may include:

  • Itchy mouth
  • Mild tongue swelling
  • Itchy eyes
  • Upset stomach

In rare circumstances, more severe symptoms such as anaphylaxis have been reported. At Allergy Partners, your allergist will supervise your first dose of SLIT in the office to monitor for any severe allergic reactions. SLIT is then taken daily at home, but patients should have access to  an epinephrine pen when taking SLIT due to the risk of anaphylaxis.

Treatment

SLIT therapies can be an excellent option for those seeking relief from allergy symptoms and for whom traditional allergy shots may not be the best choice. For patients with busy schedules, SLIT can be a convenient alternative to in-office allergy shots. For children with “needle phobia,” SLIT provides an alternative option that avoids needles all together. SLIT may also be a good option for those who have not tolerated allergy shots, and those with isolated seasonal or dust mite symptoms.

Four Steps to Relief

  1. Planning Your First Visit

Schedule an appointment at your local office and fill out our pre-registration and medical history forms to help minimize any wait time when you arrive.

  2. Your First Visit

Your initial visit will consist of a consultation, review of your medical history and a comprehensive exam to build a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.

  3. Diagnostics and Testing

We may complete one or more tests to better understand the cause of your symptoms. Common tests include skin testing, pulmonary testing, and blood testing.

  4. Treatment
