We at Allergy Partners of New Mexico want to reach out to our patients with chronic sinus and lower respiratory problems including asthma. Please let us know if you are suffering in the context of ambient smoke due to recent forest fires. We can assist.
Outdoor and indoor gas and particulate irritants will exacerbate asthma and chronic sinus symptoms, but with treatment or with the implementation of key avoidance strategies, relief can be achieved. Eye related symptoms can usually be treated with a warm compress, the addition of artificial tears and indoor ambient humidification. Also be aware that carbon monoxide levels can be an added risk for blood oxygenation leading to lower serum oxygen levels, fatigue, and often persistent headache. Seek emergency care for related symptoms and be sure your home is equipped with a working detector.
Keep in mind:
- Remain indoors when around fire-stricken areas.
- Use an indoor HEPA air filter (always avoid filters that use “ionization” or electrified metal plates as these create ozone, another irritant).
- Change furnace and air conditioning filters on time. Avoid burning candles, smoking or burning wood indoors when symptoms are already exacerbated.
- Vacuuming can also stir up dust and particles.
- Take advantage of A/C in your car (in recirculating mode) and close the vents when necessary.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Reduce time spent in smoky areas.
- If utilizing a mask to reduce irritant inhalation, only an N95 respirator mask is likely to be effective. However, be aware that breathing is mechanically difficult when these are used properly. A dampened cloth mask is the next best thing.
- Remain cautious and monitor symptoms closely when exercising, especially if outdoors.
- If using oxygen supplementation, do not adjust levels before speaking to your physician.
Please see us if you develop persistent cough, chest tightness, wheezing, shortness of breath, or persistent sinus discomfort
