Patch Testing

Fast, Simple, & Reliable

Patch testing is a type of allergy test that identifies allergens that cause contact dermatitis. This is a straightforward test in which a suspected allergen is applied to the skin in a small disc or well and monitored for any signs of reaction, such as redness or blistering, several days later. If you believe that you’re allergic to something in your home or workplace, Allergy Partners will help you confidently determine the cause of your reaction. The results of patch testing can be used to create a personalized treatment plan and help you avoid contact with the allergen in the future.

How Does Patch Testing Work?

Your doctor will select the allergens they suspect are causing your rash and place patches on your back. The patches are removed in the office after 48 hours and checked for any reactions. Your doctor may have you return 24-48 hours later (or even seven days) for another reading.

Once identified, your Allergy Partners physician will review your triggers and how to avoid future contact. Many of these triggers can be found in common products like:

  • Fragrances
  • Moisturizers
  • Shampoos
  • Make-up
  • Hair dyes
  • Metals such as jewelry or belt buckles
  • Topical medications like steroid creams or antibiotics
